Our Story
I started DH Plumbing and Heating 20 years ago after spending nearly a decade working for other plumbing companies across Roscommon and the Midlands. I got into the trade straight out of school—my uncle was a plumber and he took me on as an apprentice when I was 17. Back then, I just wanted a job that kept me busy and paid the bills. But somewhere along the way, I realized I actually enjoyed the problem-solving part of it—figuring out why a boiler wasn't firing properly or why someone's radiators were cold when the boiler was running.
The turning point came about 12 years ago. I'd been working for a company that kept double-booking jobs and leaving customers waiting for days. One evening, I got a call from a woman in Castlerea whose oil boiler had packed in completely. It was February, freezing cold, and she had her elderly mother staying with her. My boss told me we couldn't get to her for three days. I ended up going out there on my own time that night and fixing it. She was so relieved she nearly cried.
That's when I realized—people don't just need a plumber. They need someone reliable. Someone who'll actually show up. Someone who won't leave them in the lurch when their heating stops working in the middle of winter.
So I started DH Plumbing and Heating with one van, a mobile phone, and a promise to myself: answer every call, show up on time, and do the work properly. Our Founder
David Hughes started DH Plumbing and Heating over 20 years ago with one van, a toolbox, and a simple idea: be the plumber people can actually rely on.
He got into the trade at 17 when his uncle, a plumber in Roscommon, took him on as an apprentice. What started as just a way to earn a living turned into something he genuinely enjoyed—the problem-solving, the hands-on work, and especially helping people when they're stuck with a broken boiler in the middle of winter or a bathroom that's falling apart.
After working for other companies for nearly a decade, David saw the same problems over and over: plumbers who didn't show up, customers left waiting for days, jobs done poorly because someone was rushing to the next one. He realized that what people really needed wasn't just technical skill—it was someone dependable.
So he started his own business with a straightforward promise: answer every call, show up on time, and do the work properly. Twenty years later, that's still how DH Plumbing and Heating operates.
David is fully RGII-certified and specializes in oil boiler replacements, gas boiler replacements, heat pump installations, and bathroom renovations. He's seen the industry change—new technology, heat pumps becoming more popular, customers wanting more energy-efficient systems—but the core of what he does hasn't changed. It's still about fixing problems, treating people's homes with respect, and being someone they can trust.
